Sanctioned Deaths (11)

SCYTHE by Neal Shusterman
Citra and Rowan are taken in as apprentices to a scythe, one of the people inducted into the role of "gleaner" to help control the population after violence and disease are eradicated from the world, but power plays are in full force even in a utopian state. Citra and Rowan are somewhat unremarkable characters at first, but they grow into their roles as the story progresses. Tense moments, moral decisions, and twisted plot elements make this a YA novel that is hard to put down. Like he accomplishes in many of his sci-fi novels, this book makes the reader think about the cost of a perfect society. A recommended first in a projected trilogy. (Simon & Schuster, 2016)
